The Power of Negative Space in Visual Art
5 April 2026
Most beginners focus on the subject: the face, the vase, the figure. But experienced artists know that what you don't paint is just as important as what you do. Negative space — the empty areas surrounding your subject — gives your composition breathing room, guides the eye, and creates tension or calm.
Learning to See Differently
A classic exercise: instead of drawing the chair, draw the shapes between the chair's legs. This forces your brain out of symbol-drawing mode and into seeing mode. The results often surprise even experienced artists.
In Practice at Nest Atelier
In our drawing and painting classes, we regularly dedicate an entire session to negative space exercises. Students who struggle with proportion often find that working with negative space unlocks something — suddenly the drawing looks right, because the space itself is right.
